Parley 1st XI

On behalf of the players thanks go to the Chairman and committee for their backing. Also a big thank you to the loyal band of supporters who have driven many miles to follow and be there for the team. You know who you are and the support you provide is very much appreciated. On behalf of Parley Cricket Club a thank you to each and every one of the 21 players who represented the SPCL3 team during the season. Everyone can look back and know they have contributed to a good season. Special mention to Tom Jacques as leader of the gang. There have been notable performances on the field so please take a little time to savour the season. Be proud of your achievements. Off the field most games provided suitable alcoholic enjoyment and the beer fridge was an outstanding success!

Everyone connected with Parley Cricket Club and beyond should know and shout it out that the future is bright.

From a personal viewpoint it has been my absolute pleasure to have been with you again on each step throughout the season. Thank you to players, officials, parents and supporters for your company and commitment in 2023. In the years to come you may not always remember scores or the opposition but you will remember this Parley team and your playing colleagues as the journey into the Southern League commenced on it's inaugural year.

At last a dry, sunny and warm day for the visit to Lower Bemerton, home of South Wilts II for the final SPCL3 fixture for the 2023 season. Ollie Green returned for Andy Cooke and Chris Williams came back for the workaholic Owen Morris. Toss lost and the home side elected to bat.

As for most weeks this year Ollie Green and Bo Powell opened up and bowled in a miserly fashion to see just 20 runs on the board after a dozen overs. Jack Nicholls and Harry Avoth maintained the tight grip and wickets began to fall and half of their batters were back in the shed for 56 runs. Chris Williams and Marcus Bragginton were introduced later. Ultimately Greener and Pin returned to clean up the tail. There were singles for Green, Powell and Avoth, two for Bragginton and excellent work from Jack Nicholls (9-1-27-5) to achieve the team’s best bowling figures of the season and sneak ahead as the top wicket taker (24) for the league programme. In addition two further victims left skipper Tom Jacques as the Division 3 wicket keeper of the year. All out for a total of 120 from 38.5 overs.

The pursuit began watchfully until Tom Barber (18) fell at 33. Tom Jacques lost his wicket early at 56 (but was the side’s top scorer for the season with 383 runs at 31.92) and later Sam Collins (25) was adjudged LBW with the score on 82. Kieran Laird (26) and Sam Rook (22) saw the side home without further loss. 121 for 3 wickets was secured in 20.4 overs. Victory by 7 wickets to rack up 21 points.

Early in our innings we had learnt the other results would mean a third place finish in the league, which for an inaugural SPCL venture could be considered above par. But ambition burns.

Thanks to Ady Savage for scoring and another large group of our supporters were richly rewarded for making the trip to Salisbury. Thank you all.

No promotion this year but only missed by a whisker. Lessons learned can be put into practice in an eagerly awaited 2024 return. With half the side under the age of 19 and some good experience with those over 19 the future is bright.

Jack Nicholls - 9 overs, 1 maiden, 27 runs and 5 wickets

Another week with regular showers and a weather forecast for the day that was not great. Our visitors were Fareham & Crofton. Chris Williams and Ollie Green were not available and Shane Green stepped down with Sam Collins, Sam Rook and Andy Cooke returning to the fold. Toss won and F&C were asked to bat.

Frequent showers meant the covers had to be put on four or five times and an early tea was also taken to save overs. With a 15 minute delayed start the 50 overs were not completed until 6pm. There were wickets for all six bowlers used with four braces and two singles. The 10th wicket fell on the final ball to see a total of 170 all out.

The rain interruptions meant a DL calculation and the target was set at 141 from 35 overs. However with the exception of skipper Tom Jacques (43 from 52 balls) the chase did not contain any home performances of merit. Enough said. Having been 80 for 3 the side surrendered to 111 all out from 31.4 overs. The game ended after 8pm in poor light.

Thanks to Ady Savage for scoring, Trevor Jacques for re-marking and our supporters who again turned out in number to sadly witness the demise and many of whom helped throughout the day with the moving of the covers. Thanks to Bis Miller and Lewis Shipp for restocking the 'fridge'. Lastly a massive vote of thanks to Steve and Sue Laird and Mark Avoth for their work providing the end of season BBQ. However we go again next week for the final game of the season. The opportunity to achieve promotion remains alive but will depend on our performance and results elsewhere going our way.

Plenty of rain in the preceding week meant our visit to the Whitemoor Lane ground of Paultons was greeted with damp underfoot conditions. Warm and sunny periods prevailed on the day. Morris returned from holiday and Rook departed on his. Tom Barber and Williams enjoyed recalls in place of Rose and Fletcher. Remarkably skipper TJ won his second toss in succession and with favourable conditions elected to field.

The game started and ended with a bang as Ollie Green (10-6-8-4 including 3 wides) knocked back the home captain’s off pole with the opening ball of the contest (please read on for the end bang). Bo Powell (7.3-2-21-2) offered strong support ‘up the hill and against the breeze’ as he put it, to leave the opposition four batters down for 40 runs. There was also a wicket apiece for Avoth and Williams. Jack Nicholls was not buzzing or towing his usual waspish nature. He failed to take a wicket with no sting in his attack. The last 4 dismissals saw only 10 runs added and there was a Shane Green run out. Unfortunately the warm up had seen a Paultons player needing immediate hospital treatment to a damaged finger. The innings closed on 102 all out from 32.2 overs (with just 15 extras conceded)

The early end to the innings meant tea was not ready and it was necessary to have an interrupted response. Openers Barber and Shane Green fell before tea with 36 on the board. Jacques and Laird added 45 before a minor middle order wobble saw 3 wickets fall for 9 runs and the score 90 for 5. The bang at the end was from Owen Morris who struck two maximums over the bowlers head in two successive balls to overhaul the target. A victory by 5 wickets with 104 for 5 achieved from 24.4 overs to secure 20 points.

Thank you to Ady Savage for scoring. Also thanks to our regular supporters who were rewarded with an early beer. A comfortable win and hopefully we are able to extend the back to back successes in the remaining two league fixtures. Later we would hear that other results had propelled our league position to second by just a single point. With their game cancelled we are able to congratulate Sway on winning the Division 3 title. 

Having lost four out of the last five matches to the weather it was good to be playing again, especially after plenty of rain had fallen during the week before. The day was mainly cloudy but did stay dry. Holidays, a music festival and wedding preparations deprived the side of Morris, Collins and Williams leaving Marcus Bragginton to make a welcome return after 8 weeks out injured and Tom Rose flying in for a season debut. Also a special day and first team debut for 14 year old Billy Fletcher. Remarkably TJ won only his second toss of the year and proceeded to ask visitors Fawley to have first knock.

Opening up Ollie Green (8-2-23-3) and Bo Powell (7-2-14-2) bowled well in tandem and the invitation to bat decision was justified as four wickets fell with only 28 on the board. Although a steady recovery followed the innings closed on 147 after 40.2 overs. Another five bowlers were used with single wickets for each. Nicholls, Avoth, Rook and Bragginton had successes and it was fitting that Billy Fletcher (3.2-1-8-1) took the final wicket. Marcus also took an over the shoulder catch that even surprised himself. Two more dismissals for TJ see him heading the division’s wicketkeeper victim chart.

In reply Shane Green and Tom Rose had departed by a score of 26. That brought Kieran Laird to join skipper Tom Jacques (49 from 87 balls) in a match winning partnership of 100 runs. Both exhibited patience and top shot selection by punishing the poorer deliveries. Kieran remained unbeaten on 52 compiled in 89 balls as the winning runs were secured in 42.2 overs. A win by 7 wickets and a full house of 22 points achieved. Bearing in mind the recent lack of cricket this was a competent and professional performance. The same for the final three league games would be welcome.

Thank you to Janie Jacques for scoring. It was good to see our supporters in evidence after the spell of lost games. The day also saw the arrival of the Parley Bucket hat. Fortunately no rain so they could be worn on heads rather than bailing excess moisture from the sky. Billy can (another type of bucket) be happy with his debut and was presented with the match ball after the game. Well done Fletcher! (Norman Stanley would have been proud!)

Report by Alan Graham - Quite a large crowd at Parley were entertained by an excellent game of cricket, when our 1st Team played League leaders, Sway, with the match not decided until halfway through the 100th, and last, over of the match. Owen Morris top scored with 69, but nobody else managed to play a major innings.

In Sway's innings, there were 3 wickets each for Harry Avoth & Jack Nicholls, with Sam Rook also bowling well (8 overs 2-22).

​Ultimately we weren't quite good enough, but can be proud of our part in an enjoyable match.

Report by Mike Vimpany - Sway crept over the line with a nail biting one wicket win over close rivals Parley to underline their unbeaten place at the top of Southern Premier Division 3 - but the result was in the balance into the final over. 

The backbone of Parley’s 213 all out was 69 by Bryanston cricket coach Owen Morris, who has returned to his roots after playing for Totton & Eling. He was well assisted by left-hand opener Sam Collins (25), Ollie Green (29), with 23 from teen Sam Rook. 

As usual, Sway’s seamers picked up the wickets: Hugh Barnard 3-42, Jon Waller 3-29 and Dave Steadman 3-33. 16-year-old slow left arm spinner Olly Marshall was no doubt delighted with his first Southern League wicket, dismissing the dangerous Morris, brilliantly caught by Steadman patrolling the long off boundary. 

The Sway reply began steadily: openers Tim Noble (26) and John Walter (19). It was left to Alex Hall (49) to increase the tempo, until caught by Kieran Laird off Chris Williams 1-56. Dan Bailey continued the increased run rate with a boundary filled 35, after which wickets fell regularly.  Jack Nicholas 3-45, Harry Avoth 3-39 and Sam Rook 2-22 were the beneficiaries. 

At 168-8, with Greg Jones injured in the warm up yet to appear, Parley looked to be in control. Richard Thomas added an invaluable 16 but when caught by Laird off Rook at 197-9, Jones finally came out to join Jon Waller 11*. Jones 15* made light of his back problem finally dispatching two boundaries in the last over to seal a thrilling Sway win.

Home fixture against Bashley (Rydal) II abandoned after the first innings had been completed due to rain. 

We welcomed South Wilts II today. There had been an odd brief shower in early morning but it was dry by start time and also warmed up later. Sam Rook returned to the side at the expense of Tom Barber. Another toss lost and the visitors elected to bat.

After 39.3 overs their innings ended on 117 all out with 12 being the highest individual score, other than 36 extras. Wickets were shared with Jack Nicholls (8-3-14-3) and Harry Avoth (5.3-1-17-3) picking up three apiece and braces for Bo Powell (10-5-21-2) and Chris Williams (10-1-30-2). All catches were held in a good all round display.

In reply both Sam Collins and Shane Green were trapped LBW for single figure scores early on. Skipper Tom Jacques showed composure and turned ‘finisher’ with an unbeaten 57 from 85 deliveries. He showed some piercing shots (9x4 and 2x6) being well supported by Kieran Laird (33 from 55 balls) in a 66 run partnership which was broken at 105. So a total of 118 was posted without further loss after 34 overs. A seven wicket victory achieved in a comprehensive manner.

Thanks to Trevor for his half time brushing and remarking and to Ady for scoring. Also thanks to Sam Collins for restocking the ‘cold ones’. All supporters have the appreciation of the team. This was probably our best overall performance of the season to date. The halfway mark has been reached and our league position has improved to third. The platform is set. The opportunity to progress is set. Later a number of the team decamped to Poole Quay for refreshments and to celebrate Ollie Green’s birthday. Sore heads to follow.

This week was a first ever club visit to Fareham and Crofton on another extremely hot and sunny day. With Marcus Bragginton injured and Sam Rook on a university visit there were recalls for Tom Barber and Roshan Embalagama. Another toss lost and another away team fielding stint requested.

An early wicket for Ollie Green was followed by some decent restraining bowling before 16 year old Harry Avoth picked up the next wicket at 48 for 2. The home side found runs off the bat difficult to come by and slumped to 88 for 8. This was due to an excellent match winning ‘Michelle’ spell from Chris Williams. Bowling down the hill he showed his capability of beating the willow and turning the opposition into a weeping willow. Batters 3 to 7 came and went (10-2-48-5). Later Jack Nicholls enjoyed a brace (4-0-14-2) and Bo Powell wrapped up the innings. A total of 140 from 33.4 overs with 45 extras allowing a batting bonus point to be achieved.

After a steady start Sam Collins departed at 23 and was followed by Shane Green at 85. Tom Jacques (29) had increased the momentum before running past the ball to be stumped. Thereafter an unbroken partnership of 53 between Kieran Laird (27) and Tom Barber (25), when they found gaps in the field, saw 141 for 3 arrive in 33.3 overs. A seven wicket victory and 22 points secured.

Thanks to Ady for scoring and our supporters for making the long drive on a baking afternoon. A good win showing occupation as the difference between the sides. Nice to see some happy faces after the game and reflecting our 4th place in the league. More next week please.

​Chris Williams beat the willow at Fareham securing a 'Michelle'5 wickets for 48 runs from 10 overs

Paultons first ever visit to HQ and a warm sticky day to welcome them. Ollie Green and Jack Nicholls replaced James Miller and Roshan Embalagama. Winning the toss our visitors chose to bat first.

At 30 fr 5 that decision could have been questioned. However a combination of 31 extras, dropped catches, ‘going quiet’ and better batting allowed a major recovery. A total of 235 for 9 was reached. OG (10-1-35-3) stood out from the attack and there were braces for Chris Williams and Bo Powell, a single for Marcus Bragginton and a run out.

A second wicket partnership of 91 in good time between Tom Jacques (59 from 68 balls) and Sam Collins (23) set up an excellent opportunity to succeed in the chase. However on a decent track five wickets were lost for the addition of just 49 runs. Then Ollie Green (40) and Chris Williams (18) added 55 before the final four wickets fell for 12 runs. All out for 224 in 47.3 overs and a loss by 11 runs (for the second week running).

Thanks to Ady for scoring and our supporters. Time to think about basics and even playing smarter. Very disappointing result. Enough said.

On another good weather day our destination was Fawley. With holidays denying the side of Ollie Green and Jack Nicholls the opportunity to step up came to James ‘Biz’Miller and Chris ‘Willow’ Williams. Also Sam Collins was back for Cam Laird. Toss lost and the home side elected to bat.

Fifty overs later the hosts had racked up 279 runs for the loss of 6 wickets. With our bowling standards down, 48 extras and with some chances spilled plus some indifferent fielding the innings did get away and some 50+ runs may have been saved with a better all round performance. Six bowlers were used and the wickets were shared across five of them.

In a decent chase we were all out after 49.5 overs and ended up only 11 runs short. Nine out of 11 batters made double figures with Tom Jacques top scoring on 47. As the pursuit intensified Bo Powell scored 34 to take us close. Several batters will have thoughts that they should have gone on but the ‘take it deep’ mantra was played out well.

Thank you to Janie Jacques for scoring. Fewer supporters this week but their attendance is appreciated. There are learnings to take away and only a week before they can be put into practice. The Man City ‘treble’ followed in the evening – the ‘Blue Moon boys’ displaying confidence, attitude and ability. A good philosophy to follow!

This week the visitors Gosport Borough arrived unbeaten this season on a warm and sunny day. With Sam Collins and Tom Barber unavailable there were season debuts for Shane Green and Sam Rook. Also with Owen Morris reporting sick on the morning of the game Cam Laird stepped up for his first game of the year. Toss lost and the away side chose to bat first.

GB started well and had scored 112 before their second wicket fell. In reaching a total of 199 for 7 from a full fifty over allocation they were a little more circumspect for the second half of their innings. There were a brace of wickets for Ollie Green, Bo Powell and Marcus Bragginton and Jack Nicholls picked up a single. We were generally tidy as a unit but a couple of dropped catches meant more bowling points were denied.

In reply Shane Green (78 from 125 balls) showed a solid determination to occupy and play an anchor role. This was vital as the middle order perished with four wickets falling for the addition of just 10 runs. At 64 for 5 Sam Rook (51 from 68 deliveries) entered the fray and proceeded to strike the ball hard, including 3 sixes. Their 89 run partnership set up the opportunity for success but both had succumbed with 23 runs still required. Cam Laird scored an unbeaten 22 to deliver the victory by 3 wickets. The 202 winning total arrived after 47.3 overs to secure 20 points.

Thanks to Ady for scoring and Trevor for the half time remarking and double drinks carrying. Our supporters turned out in numbers – thank you. Considerable work to our playing surface has been undertaken over recent weeks thanks to our group of volunteers. They can take pride in receiving highly complementary comments and high scores for both wicket and outfield from the match umpires. Nice to be back on track with more still in the tank.

A vital 89 run partnership from the Green/Rook combo

Our first away game of the year was at Sway on a warm and sunny day. Owen Morris, playing his first game for Parley since July 2017, replaced Spencer Savage. Skipper TJ won the toss and elected to bat.

For the third week running our batters did not perform with any distinction. The innings lasted 33.2 overs. The runs column showed 114 in total. The ninth wicket partnership of 37 was the best. Extras were top scorer at 22.

However our bowling showed the togetherness of the team and with a little more luck could have seen a different result. The hosts reached 118 to win after 38.2 overs losing 7 wickets on the way. At 39 for 5 after 14 overs the home side had to battle. Ollie Green (10-2-35-3) and Bo Powell (10-4-19-2) led the fight with good support from Harry Avoth and Jack Nicholls who each secured a wicket from their spells. 22 extras were wasted.

Thanks to scorer Ady Savage who went manual this week and to our supporters who were again top drawer and included several canine companions. To repeat from last week – we can and we will bat better. We need to believe and occupy the crease. We have a chance to do that next week.

Today’s visitors were Trojans on a warm but windy day with thunderstorms having freshened the ground on Friday afternoon. Louis Parkin stepped down to accommodate a First Team debut for 16 year old pace bowler Harry Avoth. Toss won and the away team asked to have first knock.

The Trojans innings fell into three separate sections. The early loss of wickets to arrive at 36 for 5 followed by the addition of 78 runs for the next two losses and lastly the final three wickets only accumulating 4 more runs. A final total of 118 in 41.4 overs and justification for the insertion. On the bowling front the miserly Ollie Green (8-4-7-3) led the attack with braces for Bragginton and newbie Avoth. There was a wicket apiece for Powell and Savage and a run out. A decent performance against a team who had only lost one wicket chasing 125 in the previous week. The 18 extras can be improved upon.

Our response was not convincing and half of the batters were back in the pavilion with 65 on the board. Nervous tension increased when the seventh wicket fell at 91 with no batter able to show enough resistance. To relieve that situation Bo Powell entered the fray and struck four boundaries to score 18 runs from 15 deliveries and partner Spencer Savage to record a 3 wicket victory from 33.4 overs. We can and we will bat better than this display. But at the end of the day the league table statistics show P 2 W 2.

Once again thank you to our supporters for turning up in numbers and to scorer Ady Savage. With another relatively early finish the opportunity for an extended session of ‘Wizard Sticks’ was eagerly accepted. Good to see players from the other Parley sides returning to HQ with guest appearances from Jack Rowett and Adam Fowler Watt. A jovial and good humoured evening followed beyond the arrival of the night skies! Congrats to Willow on retaining his ‘WS’ champion status.

Pre-season and opening day weather challenges meant there had been little cricket so far in 2023. But this day will enter the Parley historical records as the inaugural match in the Southern Premier Cricket League. Long awaited and a true reward for the time and effort invested for us to get there. So a massive thank you to everyone involved through the years. Also grateful appreciation to the team of volunteers who have completed the preparations on and off the field over the latter weeks. Thank you to West Parley Parish Council.

Havant 2nds provided the opposition. The sun came out to play. The Parley boys were ready to play. 10 of the team had been regularly involved in the promotion winning side from last year. Of those 8 were SPCL newcomers. Louis Parkin was making his debut for Parley. New skipper Tom Jacques lost the toss and Parley were inserted. Hello Southern League cricket.

Sam Collins (15) and Tom Barber (24) provided a steady start. Patience was required and the switch from artificial nets to a grass wicket always needs concentration. Wickets fell at regular intervals and the innings closed on 138 from 41.5 overs. TJ managed 15 runs but it was Kieran Laird who led the way with an unbeaten 30. Maybe a few runs left out there.

Playing SPCL cricket saw teas return to Parley after years of ‘self- service’. This clearly energised the bowling line-up. Excellent spells all round confined the visitors to 41 all out from 20.2 overs. Jack Nicholls (3.2-2-4-4) and Ollie Green (7-3-6-3) made major inroads and were well supported by Bo Powell and Louis Parkin who secured a wicket each. One of the Havant players was unable to bat due to a back injury whilst bowling. Catches were held and as well as it being good to be playing cricket it was good to get a victory. A success by 97 runs.

Last game of the season with a visit from Hythe and Dibden. Another dry and sunny day meaning the whole 17 fixture list was completed. When was the last year that no games were lost to the weather? Skipper Alex Nippard was still out injured and skipper 2 Sam Collins was on a Spa weekend. Step up skipper 3 Tom Jacques. A return for Shane Green after holiday and Ben Blackford was back to replace the wedding attending ‘Bis’ Miller. Toss lost and the away team elected to have first knock.

A rampant Ollie Green (8.3-1-27-5) torpedoed the visitors top order to have them 24 for 4 before middle order recoveries improved the position. Later the last four wickets fell for 20 runs to see an innings total of 202 in 44.3 overs. Wicketless Bo Powell bowled well conceding 28 runs from 10 overs and sharing the new ball. Jack Nicholls and Marcus Bragginton claimed braces and Ben Blackford picked up a single wicket. Alarmingly a horrendous 47 extras were conceded. Disappointingly the tandem spinners were not able to bowl the line or length required to threaten at this level. In complete contrast Ollie Green showed the force he can be.

In reply Tom Barber (51 from 68 balls) looked completely at home in compiling a maiden first team half century and contributed to an opening partnership of 98 with Shane Green (43) to set a great platform. Tom Jacques (33 not out) played a measured knock alongside a quickfire 36 from Roshan Embalagama to see the side home at 203 for 4 in 39.5 overs with the opposition resorting to eight different bowlers. Victory by 6 wickets and a maximum 24 points earned. This cemented second place in the league table. Congratulations to Compton and Chandlers Ford on their championship win.

Thanks to Ady Savage for scoring and a rewarding conclusion for all of our supporters. After the game chefs Steve Laird and Ady Savage provided a BBQ feast for the club’s adult players and supporters. Many thanks to the team of organisers. This was combined with more than a few bottles being consumed. Thank you to the overworked fridge! Even Beer Pong featured. Plans for the accumulated ‘fines’ funds gathered on match days throughout the season can now be made.

​And so the ‘wait’ for communication regarding promotion begins after a season rated ‘not bad at all’.  

Another dry and sunny day for our visit to Easton and Martyr Worthy. With Shane Green on holiday and Sam Rook injured there was a recall for Tom Barber and ‘Bis’ Miller stepped up for his first game for the 1’s since May 2019. Sam Collins continued as skipper and elected to bat having won the toss.

Sam Collins (73 from 116 balls) and Tom Barber (32) provided a good opening base of 85 before Tom was run out in the 17th over. Marcus Bragginton (66 from 68 deliveries) showed a return to form and joined in until wicket two fell at 168. Then Tom Jacques (33 from 23 balls) added to the momentum and 234 was on the board at the fall of the next wicket, with a further nine overs still to be bowled. Thereafter wickets fell at regular intervals, attempting to increase the rate, with only Ollie Green (26 not out) sticking around. The innings concluded at 309 for 8 from the full allocation.

In response the opposition started cautiously and were 101 for 2 at the 25 over half way point. Ollie Green (9-1-27-3) and James Miller (10-1-31-2) led the bowling attack well. Good fielding and tight bowling meant control was firmly in our hands. With 10 overs remaining the home side were 126 short of the target. But this is Parley first team and a disappointing lack of concentration and shortfall of standards allowed E & MW to narrow that requirement to 42 from a couple of overs. The last ten overs produced some tense moments but ultimately the chase rested on 281 for 8 with three wickets falling late on. Single successes were claimed by Powell, Bragginton and Savage. A victory by 28 runs and 23 points secured.

​Mathematically second place in the league has been secured but the fixtures have not been exhausted. Additionally it may be a couple of months before any award of accreditation is decided and communicated. With a final round of games next week it is ‘keep powder dry’, enjoy the match, salute the season and await the opportunity to celebrate ‘big’ when all the ducks are in a row.

It was sunny and even hotter than last week for the visit of Hursley Park. Traffic delays for the visitors meant a slightly delayed start but allowed Paul Hendy to officially open the new Hendy sponsored electronic scoreboard and additional team photos to be taken. Thank you to Martin Green and Brian Nippard for organising. Fortunately the child’s paddling pool which had arrived was out of picture but did provide some age group entertainment. With skipper Alex Nippard injured the leader role was taken on by Sam Collins. Shane Green returned for Alex and Bo Powell and Sam Rook came in for Ollie Sinha and Andy Cooke. Toss lost and Parley inserted.

A steady start with the first loss at 49. Shane Green (45) progressed the score but the fourth wicket fell at 98. Then Roshan Embalagama (82 from 76 balls) and Kieran Laird (46) showed partnerships could be forged with the addition of 93 runs. Wicket six fell at 234 with around ten overs remaining. Then wickets fell all too quickly and with the 255 all out total from 47.5 overs it felt as though a good 30 runs had been missed and an opportunity lost.

HP started in an even steadier manner and lost their opener at 16. The next wicket did not fall until 78. Thereafter wickets fell at regular intervals as the game ebbed and flowed. A final total of 204 for 9 was registered after the full 50 overs response. There were braces for Ollie Green, Spencer Savage and Marcus Bragginton whilst Bo Powell, Sam Rook and Jack Nicholls secured a wicket each. Not our greatest fielding display but despite the heat there was a perseverance and some hard work to realise the 23 point reward for the 51 run victory.

Thanks to Ady Savage for scoring. Another excellent supporter turnout with appreciation offered from the team. With two fixtures remaining a top two league position will achieve the season’s target. In second place now we still need to make it happen. We need to want it and own it for just two games.

It’s still hot and sunny for our trip to the IOW to play Ryde. Spencer Savage and Ollie Sinha returned to the line up for the injured Bo Powell and the unavailable Sam Rook. Good trip across the water, toss won and laden with Tesco purchases the bat first decision goes down well.

Marcus Bragginton fell early, perhaps due to him still being in shock having seen a round hay bale for the first time(‘I thought they were all square!’). This was countered by a well constructed 174 run partnership between Sam Collins (83 from 105 balls and Alex Nippard (80 from 114 balls). However the remaining seven wickets fell for 79 runs in 14 overs as the total rested on 258 all out from 49.4 overs.

Ollie Green took three early wickets to leave the home side 44 for 3 but the score was 170 before the next wicket fell. Two wickets for Jack Nicholls(and his thoughts of another LBW hitting all three) and one for Spencer Savage with two run outs followed but always up with the rate Ryde reached the target at 259 for 8 from 48.3 overs.

A long day leaving at 7.30am and back just before midnight. The result made it a disappointing day. We go again next week with team targets to achieve and a group keen to succeed.

​A warm and sultry day with still no rain for another week as Odiham and Greywell, promoted in 2021, visited HQ. Another team without a scorer! With Spencer Savage rocking Ibiza there was a return for Sam Rook after his three week holiday absence. Toss lost and the visitors elected to take first knock.

Ollie Green (10-1-27-2) claimed an early victim and combined with Andy Cooke (7-0-22-3) to restrict the flow of runs and our opponents were 82 for 4 after the initial 20 overs. The eight overs from Marcus Bragginton slowed the tempo without him securing success. But the introduction of Jack Nicholls in over 22 changed the game. His maiden club ‘Michelle’ for 36 runs in 7.3 overs (despite 8 wides and 5 no balls) brought the innings to a halt at 143 after 35.3 overs and represented his best ever first team and club figures. Real figures of 5 for 23 – Jack certainly held up the Odiham vehicle!

The reply did not start well and with just 36 runs on the board our top four batters were back in the hutch. At 62 in over 13 we were five wickets down. Ollie Green (47 from 57 balls) and Kieran Laird (30 from 57 balls) effected a vital repair and combined with patience and top shot selection to proceed to an unbeaten partnership of 83 runs to secure a win by 5 wickets. The winning total resting on 145 after 30.4 overs. The reply had finished well.

Later we learn all other results went in our favour meaning the way the season ends is back in our own hands. A significant overall result. We now need to be fully prepared for our ‘overseas’ trip next week.

Sunny and warm for our visit to Longparish. No rain for ages but the middle of the prepared track was damp? Nippard and Ollie Green return from their Hungarian alcohol festival for Tom Saunders and Shane Green, away on leave. Toss won and Parley choose to bat first.

After an early Bragginton dismissal Alex Nippard (136 from 113 balls and Sam Collins (117 from 127 deliveries) partnered up with an excellent 248 runs.Then the score accelerated further as Tom Jacques hit 41 from 22 balls and Roshan Embalagama clubbed 62 from 23 balls, including eight 6’s. The innings closed on 403 for 6. Regrettably the home side lost two players during their fielding stint – one to a calf strain and the other to a remarkable attempt to take a boundary catch and concussing himself requiring immediate hospital treatment. Sportingly Jack Nicholls volunteered to field for them after the second injury.

Neither were able to bat and regular dismissals saw the response rest on 158 at the conclusion. Bo Powell (7-2-21-2) bowled well at the outset and Andy Cooke only conceded ten off the bat from his seven overs. Later Jack Nicholls took 3 for 48 and Spencer Savage bought his 2 for 31 from three overs. That left Tom Jacques to take the final wicket, having convinced the skipper earlier in the week that he was ‘feeling good’. We managed to bowl 9 no balls? Even more than the 7 wides!!

A celebratory beer at The Cricketers followed (the photo below is from before the game started when Bo and Spenny were asked if Alex and Sam would score ‘big’ in the game!

Onwards.

Another hot and sunny day for the visit of Compton and Chandlers Ford. Skipper Alex Nippard and Ollie Green were absent for ex-player Jamie Hicks ‘stag weekend’ in Budapest. Cam Laird and Ollie Sinha stepped down as Sam Collins returned to captain the team and Tom Saunders made his first club appearance for 2022. Also a significant debut for our new electronic scoreboard. Toss lost and the visitors elected to bat.

Bo Powell and Andy Cooke each made an early breakthrough and the score was 36 for 2 from 11 overs. A 197 run partnership followed before Jack Nicholls took a wicket and later a run out by Kieran Laird in over 42 showed wickets were hard to come by. The last sixteen overs produced 145 runs and the score settled on 299 for 4. Not our best fielding or bowling offer of the season.

Regrettably not our best batting offer either. Wickets fell at very regular intervals and with Shane Green top scoring with 28 the final wicket fell at 173 after 38.3 overs.

Soundly beaten by a team who were superior in every department and thoroughly deserved their victory. Time to lick wounds, regroup and concentrate on getting some positive results from the remaining six games. 

The hottest day of the season greeted visitors Tichborne Park, who had fallen from Southern League grace last season. However there was no thanksgiving for leaving both their umpire and scorer at home! With Ollie Green unfit and Sam Rook on his holibobs Ollie Sinha returned and Cameron Laird stepped up to make his first team debut. Two Lairds for the price of one! For a change we won the toss and the decision to bat was met with warm appreciation.

Our opening partnership was broken at 34 and Tom Jacques then hit a fluent 53 from 34 balls to take it to 120. Then Alex Nippard (112) looked good and stroked a century in 68 deliveries in a 200 run partnership over 24 overs. The glue between those batters was super Marcus Bragginton. In a quality knock a made his maiden first team ton and a half by scoring 150runs in 138 balls, including 243 fours. After that the Lairds combined in a 63 run partnership with Kieran securing a half century from the final ball of the innings (50 no out from 26) and Cam on par and supporting with an unbeaten 15. After 50 overs the scoreboard showed an impressive 428 for 5.

The Tichborne reply started aggressively and 50 was reached from 6 overs. However wickets fell at regular intervals thereafter and the innings closed on 213 all out. Unfortunately one of the TP players had to be taken to hospital whilst fielding. From an innocuous throw je dislocated his elbow and broke a humerus. Nippard took three wickets (5.5-0-27-3) with braces for Sinha, Bo Powell and Jack Nicholls.

Stats for Parley games are still being researched but 428 is the seventh highest total score from all HCL leagues and the best ever League 1 run return. Well done chaps – record breakers! Congratulations to Braggers for ‘going big’. Thanks to Ady Savage and Janie Jacques for scoring and some of our lads for square leg umpiring. The BH local derby saw us visit Winton at KGV, Ferndown. Dry to start but with possible wet stuff arriving in mid-afternoon. Great to have Tom Jacques back in Parley colours, after his return from an 8 year hiatus at Bashley, replacing Spencer Savage who was on a Spanish vacation. Also good to welcome Andy Cooke back from Uni to take the place of Joe Huns who has joined Bashley to further his Southern League ambitions after starting his cricket journey with us in 2011. Toss won and Parley chose to set a target by batting first.

Early wobbles had 27 for 3 on the board but with seven batters reaching double figures, headed by Roshan Embalagama’s 55 from 76 balls, the run accumulation proceeded in a better fashion. Contributions of 36 from Marcus Bragginton and 29 each from Kieran Laird and Sam Rook added to a final total of 253 for 9 from 49.5 overs (somehow and bizarrely the 50th over was called to a halt after just 5 balls! Obviously the umpires ready for their tea).

In response Ollie Green and Cooke bowled in tandem with tight lines and after 10 overs the score stood at 12 for 2. Tidy economic bowling and decent fielding meant runs were hard to come by and the 30 over total had progressed to 80 for 6. All seven bowlers used claimed at least one wicket and Sam Rook took two in his first spell of the season at this level. Embalagama picked up 3 catches with the gloves (well one was actually caught between his legs and not his hands). The final wicket fell at 137 from 41.5 overs.

An excellent 20+ turnout from our supporters and a solo scoring role by Brian Nippard. Thank you to all. A maximum 24 points haul was a deserved reward for a solid performance against our local rivals who had started the game in 4th position. The rain never materialised, a winning margin of 116 runs, a potential banana skin avoided and the HCL1 summit achieved following the receipt of other match results.

A happy camp!

This was Portsmouth 2nds at St Helen’s on a dry day with sunny intervals and the inevitable wind whipping off the Solent and down the ground. Joe Huns, after making his Dorset debut the previous Sunday, returned for Ollie Sinha and Sam Rook stepped up to open with Sam Collins attending a wedding. Toss lost and Parley were inserted on a decent deck and outfield. If only the wind would go away!

Shane Green fell to the opening ball of the day and at 71 for 5 the signs and some of the dismissals were not good. However skipper Alex Nippard (86 from 121 balls) and Ollie Green (68 from 96 deliveries) showed patience and responsibility in top knocks to forge a 122 run partnership. A flurry of wickets fell at the end of the innings in pursuit of bonus points and the total rested on 225 for 9 at the close. As a team 123 runs had come from the first 35 overs and 102 runs came from the final 15 overs.

The home side made a steady start and after 30overs were well placed on 103 for 2. The innings ebbed and flowed and the result remained in the balance right to the end. The final over saw 14 runs needed to eclipse and it started 1, 4, 4 only for Jack Nicholls to clean bowl the batter with ball four. A final total of 221 all out in 49.4 overs. All bowlers took a wicket with four snaring a pair each and there was a good fielding display despite the windy conditions. The latter part of the innings was tense but nerves were kept.

As the saying goes it was ‘a good game of cricket’, a good result and securing 23 points a rise to second in the league table. Enjoy the victory, rest up and be ready to go again next week.

Visitors and second placed Old Basing arrived early at 10.45am to avoid traffic problems. The wind was howling and it was not warm with occasional but brief showers. Ollie Green and Jack Nicholls returned to the side with Tom Barber and Ben Blackford stepping down. With Joe Huns visiting several universities up country his place was taken by Ollie Sinha. Another toss lost and our opponents chose to have a bat.

We have bowled better in previous games but with only 13 wides there was more control of the run rate. The first breakthrough did not come until over 21 with the score on 83. Wickets came at steady intervals and after their 50 overs OBCC totalled 218 for 5. A run out by the skipper and single wickets for Ollie Green, Powell, Savage and Bragginton accounting for those losses.

In reply openers Shane Green and Sam Collins set off at a decent lick with some top ground strokes and had 39 on the board after five overs. However both fell to wicketkeeper dismissals on 49. A match winning partnership of 150 runs in 30 overs followed. Both Alex Nippard (unbeaten 84 in 99 balls) and Marcus Bragginton (56 in 81 deliveries) combined to show fluency and confidence. The final score was 220 for 3 wickets in 41.2 overs.

The winning run continues and lifted Parley to that second place in the league. Thanks to Ady Savage for being the sole scorer. Thanks to our supporters for attending in decent numbers. All followed by a few beers at the Banterthon! Isn’t that some sort of a chatty fish?

The trip to a sunny but breezy Burridge 2nds was made without Ollie Green and Jack Nicholls. The former was ‘resting’ and the latter purchasing shirts in Turkey that were not a delight. Tom Barber and Ben Blackford stepped up. Toss lost and the home side elected to bat.

Burridge has a big outfield so 33 extras and failed catches enabled the opposition to accumulate 234 runs from their 50 overs whilst losing 7 wickets. The final 5 overs revealed 50 runs. Top wicket taker was Alex Nippard (10-0-59-3) with Blackford, Savage and Bragginton securing singles and a run out.

The chase was measured and Sam Collins (64 from 103 balls) anchored the reply with good support from captain Nippard (34 from 65 deliveries). At half way the board showed 102 for 2. With just over five runs an over needed maintaining the rate was important. The asking level was achieved but with regular wickets falling. Sam’s loss at 168 for 5 allowed the middle order to be tested. Kieran Laird (32 not out) stood firm, Tom Barber (23) found gaps and Bo Powell (19 from 18 balls) was unbeaten. Middle order tested and showed a positive response with the winning runs coming after 47.5 overs.

Thank you to our supporters and parental taxi drivers. Thank you also to Brian Nippard for another scorebook ‘work of art’. Everybody contributed and the victory was enjoyable. After the game reactions highlighted that it had been enjoyed. The manner of the performance established a belief that we can chase. The result produced a rise to third in the league table.

A shout for groundsman Jon Rake and volunteers Brian Nippard and KC who put in the hours on Friday (and every week), to prepare the ground by shunning Jubilee celebrations and declining Sevens attendance, despite a very wet overnight forecast. Some rain did fall but the ground was playable and a full uninterrupted game took place. An unchanged Parley line up took to the field after a successful toss and insertion of the visiting Fareham and Crofton side.

Early doors runs were restricted and 38 runs for the loss of 2 wickets was showing on the board after the initial 20 overs. The middle order performed better before 7 wickets fell for 36 runs to bring the innings to a close on 138 after 46.1 overs. Joe Huns (8.1-1-20-3) and Marcus Bragginton (9-0-26-3) were the principal wicket takers with two for Jack Nicholls and one each for Ollie Green and Spencer Savage. Braggers also bagged 3 catches. On the downside there were 27 wides and 5 no balls conceded.

In response our opening partnership was broken at 22 in over 11. Shane Green was then able to progress to 54 from 67 balls and contributions came from most batters. This resulted in the target being reached after 36.4 overs with a score of 142 for 5 wickets. A win and 21 points secured. Wins are important and points equally so when added up over the season. A couple more may well have been achieved had judicious shots been forthcoming in the overall circumstances faced.

Another warm sunny day for the visit to Roundhill, home of Bramshaw. Sam Rook stepped down to get some cricket and accommodate Sam Collins, making a welcome return to his Parley roots. First toss of the season won and a decision to bat on the compact New Forest ground was made.

From early exchanges Sam Collins (34) and Marcus Bragginton (25) had starts but were unable to progress whilst Shane Green and Roshan Embalagama both departed early. At 88 for 4 some control and composure was called for. Alex Nippard (76 from 71 deliveries) and Kieran Laird (117 from 99 deliveries) delivered. Both batted with flair and maturity and Kieran’s first team maiden century containing 12 fours and 8 sixes was an excellent knock. Later Ollie Green scored 37 from 14 balls with the innings resting on 335 for 6 from a full allocation. 34 x 4’s and 16 x 6’s = 232 runs in boundaries indicate how compact and leaving 103 runs from the other 250 (plus extras) balls.

In reply and in simple terms the home opening batters scoring 99 and 148 not out respectively had an impressive partnership and 211 was on the board before the first wicket fell. 2 wickets each for Ollie Green and Alex Nippard and one for Joe Huns and Marcus Bragginton followed. We have bowled better and maybe underestimated the task in hand with that score in the book. Bramshaw surpassed the target after 48.4 overs. A disappointing result but credit where it is due. A timely reminder that a lot of cricket matches are won in heads and that we win and lose as a team.

An umpire injury allowed KC to get on the field at square leg between overs 26 and 45. Thanks to Bramshaw for providing a top tea, Steve Laird for scoring and our usual band of supporters. A player reminder that cricket is an inclusive game and Parley as a club expect total support at all times.

You win one, you lose one – time to start an unbeaten sequence!

A warm and sunny day greeted visitors St Cross Symondians 3rds. Sam Rook came in for Tom Barber as this game provided the first opportunity to bounce back from the disappointing defeat a week earlier. Skipper Alex Nippard made it a hat trick of lost tosses this season and Parley were asked to field. Our opponents, despite the size of their club, could not muster a scorer and Tom Huns volunteered to maintain the book.

Excellent opening spells in tandem from Joe Huns (7.2-1-20-4) and Ollie Green (8-4-8-3) and strong support from Bo Powell (7-3-16-2) made major inroads to the batting line up from the get-go and at 40 for 8 the writing was on the wall. A minor recovery to 74 all out in 29.2 overs improved the position with Spencer Savage taking the remaining scalp. Credit to the bowlers, a much improved fielding performance and a palpable team spirit all in evidence. Five opposition batters failed to trouble the scorers.

Shane Green (38 not out) and Kieran Laird (30 not out) set about chasing this score with confidence and at a good rate. Both were still at the crease when 75 was achieved from 11.4 overs. A win by 10 wickets to secure 24 points and the game concluded by 4pm. A bounce back worthy of ‘Tigger’ status. The early finish allowed plenty of celebration time and empty bottles easily recorded a first century of the year.

Week 2 and a visit to Chapel Gate 2, home of Bournemouth 2nds. A Southern League abandonment due to a dangerous pitch the previous week meant this fixture was played on a previously used track (but used maybe as many as 8 times in the last two weeks). It was tired and it showed as the match progressed with unpredictable and unacceptable low bounce. The pitch performance for the two innings was not consistent and the result was probably influenced by the outcome of the original toss.

Our opponents batted first and made 256 for 4 from 50 overs. Parley responded with 187 for 9 from the same allocation. A defeat by 69 runs.

Parley positives from the game were runs for Marcus Bragginton (55), Shane Green (46) and Tom Barber (25) on debut, wickets for four bowlers, 2 catches for skipper Nippard, a Green/Bragginton partnership of 126 runs, only 6 wides in 50 overs and a nice sunny day.

After the usual poor pre-season results the 2022 HCL campaign got underway with a visit to the ‘Southern League 2021 Ground of the Year’ at Alton. Playing alongside the Watercress Line steam trains and a frequently returning ‘Mr Softee’ ice cream van added to the opening day spectacle. Team/squad comparison shows Tom Saunders remaining in Wales this summer and a largely unchanged youth group remaining. Alex Nippard captains and it is hoped they will benefit from having played a full league season last year. Six of the starting line up are from the Under 18 age group.

Dry and breezy conditions with a decent surface. Toss lost and the home side elected to bat. Ollie Green (8.5-3-24-3) and Joe Huns opened the attack with good support from Bo Powell (10-1-28-3) and Spencer Savage. Major inroads to the opposition batters saw the board showing 57 for 6 after 20 overs. Wickets fell steadily and the innings closed on 126 after 45.5 overs with Spenny nabbing 2 victims and Huns one plus a run out. Early season catching could have been better and the 29 extras showed lessons from last season still need to be learnt.

Shane Green (38) opened the response with Kieran Laird (11) before the first wicket fell at 33. A match winning partnership of 71 between Green and Marcus Bragginton (48) followed but both fell within seven runs of each other to leave Nippard and Embalagama to knock off the winning runs in the 22nd over. A victory by 7 wickets.
